Grounding

A grounding product is a conductive surface (mat, sheet, pillow cover or wrist strap) connected by a cord to electrical earth. When your skin contacts it, your body is brought to the same electrical potential as ground. The measurable physical effect is a reduction in AC body voltage induced by 50 Hz electric fields from household wiring and appliances.

Published measurements (Applewhite 2005 in European Biology and Bioelectromagnetics; Brown 2016) show ungrounded body voltage of 1–8 V AC in typical rooms drops to 30–100 mV when grounded — roughly 35× to 100× reduction. Currents flowing through a grounded body are nanoamperes, far below the threshold of human perception (Brown 2016).
