Mobile or cellular phones are now a modern and integral part of modern telecommunications. Over half the population uses mobile phones in many countries, multiplying the market.
In 2014, there were an estimated 6.9 billion subscriptions globally. In some parts of the world, mobile phones are the most reliable or the only phones available.
Electromagnetic fields (or EMFs) of all frequencies are among the fastest-spreading environmental impact factors. As a result, entire populations now live under constant exposure to historically unprecedented levels of EMFs. Moreover, exposure to this manufactured radiation will increase as wireless technology marches forward. As a result, some have called this new environmental pollution "Electrosmog" and require EMF protection.

When the manufacturers test cell phones for compliance, they do so with a separation between the phone and the body to continue being compliant with the FCC (and other European bodies) guidelines. Cell phones were never designed to be carried against the body. Yet, most users are unaware of this significant safety warning buried within their mobile phones user manual under the word 'Legal".
The FCC and other European bodies have set a so-called 'safe' limit for RF exposure from cell phones which is currently 1.6W/kg.
However, it should be noted this limit was set back in 1993 on a phantom head modelled on a male marine soldier and not the average size/weight of most users.
When this limit was set, there was no consideration of a child's size /weight.
For a cell phone manufacturer to meet the FCC guidelines, first, the measured SAR of the phone must be below 1.6W/kg –to remain under this threshold, the cell phone manufacturers test their phones at various distances from the body.
Cell phone manufacturers adjust the distance required during compliance testing until the 'safe' limit is met. The cell phone instruction manual will then state the specified length to keep their phone from the body to meet this limit.
The rapid pace of mobile phone technology is advancing faster than the research required into the potentially harmful effects they can cause; much more research is needed (and is being undertaken) before we can know the effects they have on human health, which are just beginning to understand.
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on May 31, 2011, that mobile phones emit enough radiation to add it to the same carcinogenic list as exhaust from engines and lead. Yet, the WHO assured mobile phone users that there were no significant risks from repeated use for years.
In a press release in 2011, the World Health Organisation the IARC CLASSIFIES RADIOFREQUENCY ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS AS POSSIBLY CARCINOGENIC TO HUMANS.
Lyon, France, May 31, 2011 ‐‐ The WHO/International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B), based on an increased risk for glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer1, associated with wireless phone use

What the US & France are doing about cell phone radiation
Berkeley in the US http://www.saferemr.com/2014/11/berkeley-cell-phone-right-to-know.html?m=1 (as well as Maine & Hawaii) are making warnings about mobile phone radiation easily visible at the point of sale when all mobile phones are purchased as well as on the phone's packaging.
The Berkeley ordinance which required retailers to display warnings about mobile phone radiation at the point of sale was challenged twice already by telcos and just now has been upheld http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2017/10/11/appeals-court-wont-reconsider-challenge-to-berkeley-cellphone-warnings-law/
The recent French 'Phonegate' scandal saw the National Frequency Agency in France having to disclose (under court order) that 9 out of 10 mobile phones exceeded the government radiation levels https://ehtrust.org/cell-phone-radiation-scandal-french-government-data-indicates-cell-phones-exposeconsumers-radiation-levels-higher-manufacturers-claim/ the issue of cell phone radiation is once again back in the media.

What can we do about it?
So how can we take matters into our own hands?
What simple precautions can we take to reduce the radiation levels we absorb from using phones?
Thankfully, there are many great tips that we can utilize right now!
Some simple steps include:
- Moving your device 20cm away from your head reduces radiation doses by around 98%. So instead of placing it under your pillow when going to bed, try to leave the phone on your bedside table.
- Set your device to airplane mode when you don't need access to the internet
- Don't carry your phone in your bra.
- Put your phone in a Faraday bag
- Hands-free and air tube headsets dramatically reduce radiation emissions into the brain.
- Try not to chat for hours on end or, if you must, get a hands-free kit.
- It's always sensible to take precautions where children are concerned, as their developing brains and bodies are far more susceptible to radiation effects than adults, absorbing radiation at three times an adult's rate.
There are solutions on the market that you can fit onto your phone that reduce radiation emissions or allow the body to neutralize the effects.
One of those products is "Radichip" by CellSafe.
The Cellsafe(r) Radi Chip(TM), is created by an Australian RF Engineer, Developing patent-pending technology.
Radi-Chips consist of multiple layers of specially formulated microwave absorbing materials, combined with a specially engineered passive directional RF coupler. These layers absorb most of the transmitted RF signal from the mobile phone's antenna. At the same time, the RF coupler controls and disperses the signal towards the back of the phone.
Devices that claim to act as 'shields' may significantly interfere with the phone's regular operation. For example, reduced or redirected transmission levels caused by such shielding products can interfere with call reception and quality and drive calls to drop out. The Radi Chip technology has been scientifically tested and proven not to interfere with the transmission signal or with call reception, unlike these 'shielding' devices.

Another solution that is emerging is the use of EMF clothing. Yes, you heard right, EMF clothing!
Radiation protection clothing manufacturers make these products look and feel like regular clothes you wear in your day-to-day life.
The only difference is that these clothes use EMF shielding fabric, a mix of copper, aluminium, silver, stainless steel, and nickel with natural or synthetic fibers like cotton, rayon, silk, or polyester.
This unique blend of metal and fiber creates a fabric that turns these clothes into powerful EMF shields, which stops electromagnetic radiation from entering the body by deflecting it in the opposite direction.
In short, the evidence is objective enough for the WHO to classify EMF radiation as a Class B carcinogen and for thousands of scientists Worldwide to appeal for more robust safety measures are being put on the table.
And that's why it's worth taking preventive measures. As we always say, many of those measures are free, like keeping more distance from your devices and limiting their use.
When that's not possible, radiation shielding clothing is an excellent option. You wear clothing anyway! So all you're doing is adding a layer of fabric that deflects EMF rays away from your body.
The truth is that the long-term effects of high-frequency signal exposure from sources are still unknown because the general public has not been exposed to these types of frequencies for long periods of time.
So until we have more information and research on the possible health effects, the best thing we can do is shield ourselves against it.
